9th Round Pick Makes Pirates Look Good? And Other Links.

According to CentreDaily.com the Pirates 9th round pick Tony Watson is looking good.  He is 6-0 with a 1.63 ERA in the NY-Penn League.

BTW Take:

Wow, good press on a Pirates draft choice.  How odd is that?

The Providence Journal is the latest publication to mention the Pirates and Wily Mo in the same sentence.

The Pirates have two relievers — Damaso Marte and Salomon Torres — to deal for Pena, though to date the two teams have yet to come to an agreement. The clubs were scheduled to talk again last night.

Also mentioned:

Chicago has made super-utilityman Rob Mackowiak available, but according to teams who have talked to the Red Sox, Boston has little interest in him.

BTW Take:

Nothing new here with Pena, outside of talks are ongoing.  Look for Pena and a minor leaguer or two to come to Pittsburgh for both bullpen arms if a deal is struck.  as mentioned in the Post Gazette, Torres' grievance filed against the Pirates may be a tripping point.

Mack-o-wack on the blocks.  I hope he goes to a contender not from NY.

Minor Matters

Quick notes from the Minors:

SS Brian Bixler is batting .290.

1B Steve Pearce (.335) hit his 24th home run (13 with Altoona) going 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs.

3B Neil Walker (.298) went 2 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBIs.

CF Andrew McCutchen (.243) went 1 for 4 with a walk.

BTW Take:

Good news McCutchen has recovered somewhat nicely since his early season issues.

Pearce is simply a masher, but I am shocked with the BA.

Walker is still around .500, which speaks nicely for an Arrival at AAA next season.

Bixler may get a call up if DL can find a taker for Jack-O.
