Pre-Game Notes

LHP TOM GORZELANNY (3-1, 3.06 ERA) vs. RHP DAVE BUSH (2-2, 6.23 ERA)

The 24-year-old lefthander is making his sixth start of the season tonight...He had his three game winning streak snapped in his last start.

Gorzelanny allowed five runs in 6.0 innings of work and lost an 8-1 decision against Cincinnati’s Matt Belisle at PNC Park Saturday night...He did not allow a run in his first three innings before the Reds took a 1-0 lead in the fourth...One inning later Cincinnati scored four more times for a 5-0 lead.

Tom has held opponents to an .093 average (4-for-43) during the first time through the lineup this season...Opponents are hitting .351 (13-for-37) the second time through, .270 (10-for-37) the third time through and .500 (1-for-2) the fourth time through the lineup.

In his last 13 starts, dating back to July 23 of last season, Tom has been charged with 25 earned runs in 82.1 innings of work (2.73 ERA)...In that time, he has pitched at least 6.0 innings 10 times. 3-0

Gorzelanny went 3-0 in his first four outings before suffering his first loss in his last start...During the three game winning streak, he posted a 2.05 ERA (26.1ip/6er) and held opponents to a .211 batting average against (20-for-95).

Tom has limited left-handed batters to one hit in 19 at bats (.105 average) this season...Overall this year, opponents are hitting at a .235 clip against him (28-for-119)...In addition, he has allowed just four six base hits (five doubles and one home run) in his first five starts.

0-0 with a 1.17 ERA (7.2ip/1er) in two appearances (one start)...Last year he went 0-0 in one start with a 1.29 ERA (7.0ip/1er)...He allowed two runs over 7.0 innings and was in line for the win but had a no-decision in Pittsburgh’s 6-3 loss on 8/15 at PNC Park...He served up a Corey Hart solo homer in the second and allowed an unearned run in the third....He also retired two of the three batters he faced in 0.2 innings of relief on 9/30/05 at
PNC Park.

The 24-year-old lefthander will be making his sixth start of the season tomorrow evening...He lost a 9-5 decision (4.0ip/6r/6er/2bb/2so) to Cincinnati’s Aaron Harang Sunday at PNC Park...Tossed his first major league complete game and shutout in his start on 4/24; a 3-0 blanking of the Astros at PNC Park...Went 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA in his first three starts, losing his season debut at Cincinnati on 4/6 (5.0ip/4er) and his third start at Milwaukee on 4/18 (6.0ip/5er).

0-1 with a 7.50 ERA (6.0ip/5er) in one start...He allowed three first inning runs and lost a 7-3 decision (6.0ip/5er) to Claudio Vargas on 4/18 at Miller Park...2-1 with a 3.54 ERA (28.0ip/11er) in four career starts...He made his major league debut in Milwaukee on 8/30/05 and held the Brewers scoreless for 8.0 innings while getting the win over Doug Davis.

MLB All-Star Voting

Beginning May 1st at PNC Park, fans will be able to vote for the players for this year’s All-Star Game, which is scheduled to be played at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Tuesday, July 10...A total of eight Pirates are on this year’s ballot (Jason Bay, Freddy Sanchez, Jack Wilson, Adam LaRoche, Jose Bautista, Chris Duffy, Xavier Nady and Ronny Paulino)...Voting at PNC Park will continue through June 17...Twenty-one million ballots will be distributed at the 30 Major League ballparks and an additional 1.7 million ballots will be distributed to 95 Minor League Baseball Clubs that are in-season during the balloting period.

Vote on the All-Time Rawlings Gold Glove Team. Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazeroski are on the ballot and need your support...Fans can continue to vote until June 19 at

Today the Pirates have recalled right-handed pitcher Marty McLeary from Triple-A Indianapolis and have placed righthander John Wasdin on the 15-day disabled list with a right thumb sprain...In four starts with Indy, McLeary went 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA (21.0ip/16h/10r/6er/5bb/16so)...He allowed just two hits over 6.0 innings of shutout ball in his last start while picking up the win on 4/28 at Ottawa.

Catcher Humberto Cota (left shoulder strain - eligible on 5/8) and pitcher John Wadin (right thumb sprain - eligible on 5/18) are on the 15-day disabled list.

Through The Dugout:
Jose Bautista - Has started all 26 games at third base...Leads all N.L. third basemen in fielding pct. (no errors/95 chances).

Jason Bay - Has gone 12-for-22 (.545) with a double, 2 triples, 4 HR, 5 RBI and 8 runs in last 6 games at Miller Park.

Jose Castillo - Grounded out as a pinch hitter on Tuesday (has gone 0-for-4 off the bench).

Ryan Doumit - Has gone 9-for-20 (.450) with three doubles, two homers and six RBI since being recalled on 4/26.

Chris Duffy - Has reached base safely in 21 of his 24 starts in CF...Is hitting .421 (8-for-19) in his last five road games.

Brad Eldred - Struck out in pinch hit appearance on Monday...Had second two-hit game of the season on Friday night.

Don Kelly - Grounded out as pinch hitter on Wednesday...Singled as a pinch hitter in Los Angeles on 4/22.

Adam LaRoche - Batted .133 in April - hit .200 (15-for-75) last April and .275 (22-for-80) in May.

Nate McLouth - Is hitting at a .364 clip (4-for-11) with nobody on base.

Xavier Nady - Has not started a game (or played the field) since suffering left hamstring strain in Los Angeles on 4/21.

Ronny Paulino - Has started 20 of the first 24 games at catcher...Has gone 6-for-17 (.353) in his last five games.

Freddy Sanchez - Has a three-game hitting streak (6-for-13, .462)...Has gone 4-for-9 in May after batting .224 in April.

Jack Wilson - Has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games, going 16-for-54 (.296) with 11 runs scored.

Through The Pen:
Jonah Bayless - Has surrendered six hits and five runs in his last two outings (0.1ip), raising ERA from 3.00 at the end of April to 6.57.

Matt Capps - Tossed a scoreless inning and picked up the win Monday vs. Chicago - his 10th straight win dating back to last season.

Shawn Chacon - Made his 200th career appearance while tossing 3.0 scoreless frames against the Cubs at PNC Park Wednesday afternoon.

John Grabow - Retired first two Chicago batters he faced Tuesday before being charged with two earned runs.

Damaso Marte - Tossed a scoreless 9th inning against Chicago on Wednesday...Has made four straight scoreless outings (2.2ip).

Marty McLeary - Was recalled today from Indianapolis (AAA), where he went 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA (21.0ip/16h/10r/6er/5bb/16so) in four starts.

Salomon Torres - Picked up his eighth save Monday night vs. Chicago...Has 20 saves in 24 chances since September 1, 2006.

John Wasdin - on the 15-day disabled list.
