Pre-Game Notes

APRIL 14, 2007 AT PNC PARK --- GAME #11, HOME #5
LHP BARRY ZITO (0-2, 8.18 ERA) vs. RHP TONY ARMAS (0-1, 13.50 ERA)

The 28-year-old lefthander (turns 29 on April 29) is making his second start of the 2007 season tonight.
Tony’s first appearance in a Pittsburgh uniform came in 30-degree weather last Saturday (4/7)...He was spotted a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, but surrendered three in the bottom of the frame and also lost a 5-4 lead in the 4th while losing a 7-5 decision to Aaron Harang.
Armas went 2-1 with a 3.70 ERA in six Grapefruit League appearances (five starts)...He ranked second on the staff behind Tom Gorzelanny (26.0) with 24.1 innings pitched and second behind Ian Snell (3-0) in victories.
Tony spent the first eight years of his big-league career pitching with the Montreal/Washington organization...He made his major league debut with the Expos on 8/16/99 at San Francisco and went 9-12 with a 5.03 ERA in 30 starts with the Nationals last season.
2006 SEASON:
Armas made 30 starts with Washington a year ago, his second-highest start total since making a career-high 34 with Montreal in 2001...He won five straight decisions from April 18 thru May 25, one victory shy of his career-high winning streak set in 2001...Tony also made two rehab starts while spending time on the disabled list with a right forearm strain from June 23 to July 17.
0-1 with a 14.73 ERA in one start...He lost an 8-6 decision at AT&T Park on 8/2 (3.2ip/8h/6r/6er/1bb/1so).
1-4 with a 5.28 ERA in five starts (29.0ip/17er)...He picked up lone win on 5/12/02 while pitching in Montreal and made major league debut in SF on 8/16/99 and lost a 7-4 decision (6.0ip/4r/1er).

The 25-year-old righthander will be making his third start of the season tomorrow afternoon... He suffered a 3-1 loss to the Cardinals in the Pirates Home Opener Monday afternoon (7.0ip/6h/1r/1er/1bb/3so) after receiving a no-decision in his first start while striking out a careerhigh 11 batters in Pittsburgh’s 3-2 victory in Houston on 4/3...Went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA (21.0ip/7er) in six Grapefruit League outings, leading the club in wins and strikeouts (24)...Spent first full season in the majors with Pittsburgh in 2006 and went 14-11 in 32 starts...Led club in wins and K’s (169).
1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career start (7.0ip/0er)...He won a 2-0 decision over Noah Lowry last year on 6/10 at AT&T Park, retiring each of the final eight batters he faced.

In the current fan balloting tally for the All-Time Rawlings Gold Glove Team, Roberto Clemente ranks second behind Willie Mays among all outfielders (three outfielders will be chosen)...Bill Mazeroski is currently fourth among second basemen, behind Joe Morgan, Roberto Alomar and Ryne Sandberg...Fans can continue to vote until June 19 at www.RawlingsGoldGlove.com.

  • With 498 career victories, Jim Tracy is just two wins shy of 500 in his managergial career, He will become the 12th active manager with 500 career wins.
  • The entire Pirates team will wear uniform #42 during Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson celebration on Sunday, April 15...Baseball’s national celebration of the 60th anniversary of Robinson’s major league debut will take place at Dodger Stadium on April 15 prior to the game between the Dodgers and Padres.
  • Prior to tonight’s game, the Pirates announced that the club will retire the number 11 worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Paul Waner...Today marks the anniversary of Waner’s big league debut with the Pirates in 1926...The team will hold a pregame ceremony on July 21 to officially add Waner’s name to the list of retired numbers along the club level facade..The July 21 date marks the anniversary of Waner’s induction into the Hall of Fame in 1952.
  • The Pirates won six of their seven games played against San Francisco last year, winning all three played at PNC Park while holding the Giants to just four runs.

Pitcher John Grabow (left elbow irritation - eligible on 4/7) is on the 15-day disabled list...He is currently with Triple-A Indianapolis on a rehab assignment.

Through The Dugout:
Jose Bautista - Has started each of the first 10 games at third base...Went deep for first time this season on Tuesday.

Jason Bay - Has hit safely in five of his last six games and in eight of his 10 overall.

Jose Castillo - Grounded out as a pinch hitter Friday night - his first plate appearance since last Saturday (4/7).

Humberto Cota - Made second start/appearance Wednesday vs. St. Louis and went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Chris Duffy - Connected off Russ Ortiz for three-run homer in 9th inning Friday night - his first home run of the season.

Brad Eldred - Made start at first base Wednesday afternoon vs. St. Louis and went hitless in five at bats.

Don Kelly - Lined a single to center field off Russ Ortiz for first major league hit Friday night.

Adam LaRoche - Has started nine of the first 10 games at first base (sat out Wednesday’s contest with a stiff back).

Nate McLouth - Played final three innings of Friday’s game in right field and went 2-for-2 at the plate.

Xavier Nady - Went 2-for-4 with a walk in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the Cardinals at PNC Park.

Ronny Paulino - Has started eight of the first 10 games at catcher (did not play Wednesday and on 4/7 in Cincinnati).

Freddy Sanchez - Has reached base safely in four of his five games played.

Jack Wilson - Has started all 10 games at shortstop.

Through The Pen:
Jonah Bayless - Tossed 1.2 scoreless frames Wednesday vs. St. Louis...Has allowed just three hits (5.0ip) in his team-high tying six appearances.

Matt Capps - Pitched 1.0 scoreless frame Wednesday vs. St. Louis...Singled off Todd Coffey for first major league hit in 8th inning Sunday at CIN.

Shawn Chacon - Pitched career-high 4.0 innings of relief Friday night vs. SF - only run allowed came on solo homer to Barry Bonds (5 K’s).

Damaso Marte - Struck out four of the six batters he faced while tossing 2.0 perfect innings of relief against the Giants Friday night.

Juan Perez - Issued four walks while pitching a scoreless 9th inning Friday night...Shares team lead with six appearances.

Salomon Torres - Surrendered a pinch-hit home run in ninth inning to St. Louis’ Chris Duncan on Wednesday and suffered first loss.

John Wasdin - Allowed one run in the 12th inning and suffered first loss Tuesday night vs. St. Louis.
