TODAYS STARTER:
TOM GORZELANNY:
The 24-year-old lefthander is making his fourth start of the season today...He led the Bucs with 26.0 innings pitched this spring.
LAST START:
Tom came two outs away from his first career complete game while winning a 6-1 decision against St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright Tuesday afternoon at Busch Stadium...He no-hit the Red Birds thru 4.0 innings and allowed his only run in the fifth...Matt Capps recorded the last two outs after fanning Scott Rolen and Preston Wilson.
IN THE SPRING:
Gorzelanny went 0-2 with a 7.96 ERA in seven Grapefruit League games (five starts)...He was scored upon in the 1st inning in all five of his starts.
SETTLING IN:
In his last 11 starts, dating back to July 23 of last season, Tom has been charged with 17 earned runs in 70.1 innings of work (2.18 ERA)...In that time, he has pitched at least 6.0 innings eight times.
TOUGH LUCK:
Tom twirled 7.0 scoreless innings and left the game with a 2-0 lead but came away with a no-decision in Pittsburgh’s 3-2, 12-inning loss April 10 vs. St. Louis at PNC Park...He retired his last eight batters before exiting the contest...St. Louis scored twice in the ninth off Pirates closer Salomon Torres to tie the score before winning in 12.
BATTING AVERAGE AGAINST:
Tom has held opposing batters to a .208 batting average against (15-for-72) in his first three starts...He has allowed just two extra base hits (a pair of doubles by Preston Wilson and So Taguchi in his last start) in his first three outings.
GORZELANNY vs. LOS ANGELES:
CAREER:
0-0 with a 27.00 ERA (1.0ip/3er) in one relief appearance...He allowed three runs in 1.0 inning of work on 9/26/05 at Dodger Stadium.

TOMORROW'S STARTER:

The Pirates will open a nine game homestand beginning Tuesday evening against the Houston Astros...The Cincinnati Reds (April 27-29) and the Chicago Cubs (April 30-May 2) will also visit PNC Park during the homestand... Pittsburgh has played 13 of its first 17 contests on the road (two of the club’s games against the Giants last weekend at PNC Park were rained out).
Bucco infielder Jose Bautista enters this afternoon’s game with a career-high tying nine game hitting streak, going 11-for-37 (.297) with a pair of doubles and a home run...Jose has reached base safely in 15 of his 16 games this season...He also hit safely in nine games during the 2006 season.

ON THE D.L.:
Pitcher John Grabow (left elbow irritation - eligible on 4/7) is on the 15-day disabled list...He is currently with Triple-A Indianapolis on a rehab assignment...He made his fourth rehab appearance on Saturday vs. Richmond and worked 1.0 scoreless inning...He threw a total of 19 pitches on Saturday (12 strikes)...He has allowed one run in 4.0 innings of work during his four game rehab stint with the Indians.

Don Kelly - Made defensive appearance in right field Saturday night in Los Angeles (played in front of second base bag).

Adam LaRoche - Has started 15 of the first 16 games at first base (sat out April 11 contest with a stiff back).

Nate McLouth - Played final five innings in right field Saturday night in Los Angeles...Has not started a game this year.

Xavier Nady - Has seven RBI in his last six games...Left Saturday’s game with a left hamstring strain (is day-to-day).

Ronny Paulino - Has started 13 of the first 16 games at catcher (did not start on 4/19, 4/11 and on 4/7).

Freddy Sanchez - Has reached base safely in eight of his 10 games played...Went 1-for-5 Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Jack Wilson - Has started all 16 games at shortstop...Went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored Saturday in LA.

Jonah Bayless - Was scored upon for first time (0.1ip/2r) while suffering first loss this season in 10-inning game @Los Angeles on Saturday.

Matt Capps - Worked a scoreless eighth inning Saturday night in Los Angeles...Tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning Thursday in Milwaukee.

Shawn Chacon - Surrendered a walkoff grand slam to Los Angeles’ Russell Martin (the only batter he faced) Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.

Damaso Marte - Walked the only batter he faced (Luis Gonzalez) Saturday night in Los Angeles.
