The 28-year-old righthander (turns 29 on April 29) is making his second start of the 2007 season tonight...He was in line to pitch game two of Pittsburgh’s doubleheader against San Francisco last Sunday but both games were postponed due to rain.
Tony’s first appearance in a Pittsburgh uniform came in 30-degree weather on April 7...He was spotted a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, but surrendered three in the bottom of the frame and also lost a 5-4 lead in the 4th while losing a 7-5 decision to Aaron Harang.
IN SPRING TRAINING:
Armas went 2-1 with a 3.70 ERA in six Grapefruit League appearances (five starts)...He ranked second on the staff behind Tom Gorzelanny (26.0) with 24.1 innings pitched and second behind Ian Snell (3-0) in victories.
CHANGE OF SCENERY:
Tony spent the first eight years of his big-league career pitching with the Montreal/Washington organization...He made his major league debut with the Expos on 8/16/99 at San Francisco and went 9-12 with a 5.03 ERA in 30 starts with the Nationals last season.
Armas made 30 starts with Washington a year ago, his second-highest start total since making a career-high 34 with Montreal in 2001...He won five straight decisions from April 18 thru May 25, one victory shy of his career-high winning streak set in 2001...Tony also made two rehab starts while spending time on the disabled list with a right forearm strain from June 23 to July 17.
ARMAS vs. LOS ANGELES:
0-1 with an 18.00 ERA (3.0ip/6er) in one start...He lost a 13-1 decision against Chad Billingsley at Dodger Stadium on 7/28.
2-2 with a 5.16 ERA (29.2ip/17er) in six career starts...He tossed 7.0 shutout innings and struck out eight batters while winning a 3-1 decision against Eric Gagne on 7/28/01 with the Expos...His other win came on 8/3/05...His other loss came on 5/17/02 at Dodger Stadium...He allowed six runs in 5.2 innings and lost an 8-5 decision against Hideo Nomo.
The 25-year-old righthander will be making his fourth start of the season tomorrow evening...He won a 3-2 decision (7.0ip/1r/1er) over St. Louis’ Anthony Reyes in his last start Monday at Busch Stadium...Whiffed a career-high 11 batters but had a no-decision (6.0ip/2r) in 2007 debut on 4/3 in Houston...Allowed just one run in 7.0 innings vs. St. Louis in Pirates Home Opener on 4/9 but took the loss in 3-0 shutout...Went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA (21.0ip/7er) in six Grapefruit League outings, leading the club in wins and strikeouts (24).
vs. LOS ANGELES:
1-0 with a 5.73 ERA (11.0ip/7er) in two starts in 2006...He received a no-decision in Pittsburgh’s 7-6 win @PNC Park on 4/11 (5.0ip/6er) and won a 10-6 decision @Dodger Stadium on 9/19 (6.0ip/1er)...He is 1-1 with a 7.50 ERA (18.0ip/15er) in 4 career appearances (three starts).

- Pittsburgh’s bullpen enters tonight’s game with a 2.31 ERA (46.2ip/12er), which ranks fourth among all major league clubs behind the New York Mets (1.51), San Diego Padres (2.15) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2.28)...Yesterday in Milwaukee, Pittsburgh’s relievers scattered two hits over 4.0 scoreless innings of work.
