TODAYS STARTER:
IAN SNELL:
The 25-year-old righthander is making his third start of the 2007 season in game one this afternoon.
LAST START:
Ian allowed just one run over 7.0 innings but lost a 3-0 decision to St. Louis’ Braden Looper in Pittsburgh’s Home Opener Monday afternoon...The only run he allowed came in the fourth inning...Albert Pujols led off with a double and Scott Rolen followed with a run-scoring single...The Pirates were held to just three hits in the game.
IN SPRING TRAINING:
Snell went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA (21.0ip/7er) in six Grapefruit League outings (four starts)...He led the club in wins and all National League Grapefruit League pitchers in strikeouts (24).
2006 SEASON:
Ian produced a team-leading 14 wins last year, the most by a Pittsburgh pitcher since Todd Ritchie went 15-9 in 1999...He also recorded a team-high 169 strikeouts, the most by a Pirates right-handed pitcher since Kris Benson had 184 punchouts in 2000...Snell ranked 10th among N.L. pitchers with a 8.2 strikeouts/9.0ip ratio.
GOING SIX:
Ian has pitched at least 6.0 innings in each of his first two starts...Since the beginning of the 2006 campaign, Snell has posted an 11-6 record in 19 starts when he pitches 6.0 or more innings.
11 K’s:
Snell struck out 11 Houston batters in his first start of the season on 4/3; the most whiffs by a Bucco pitcher since Kip Wells fanned 12 Philadelphia batters on 7/5/05. ...The club record for most K’s in a game by a righthander is 14, set by Bob Moose on 9/16/69 vs. Philadelphia and matched by Jose DeLeon on 4/16/85 vs. New York.
SNELL vs. ST LOUIS:
2007:
0-1 with a 1.29 ERA (7.0ip/1er) in one start...He lost a 3-0 decision to Braden Looper in Pittsburgh’s Home Opener on 4/9.
CAREER:
1-2 with a 4.32 ERA (25.0ip/12er) in five appearances (four starts)...Last year he went 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA (12.0ip/7er) in two starts..He won a 3-2 decision over Jeff Weaver on 8/12 at PNC Park (7.0ip/2er) and lost a 6-3 decision to Anthony Reyes on 9/3 at Busch Stadium (5.0ip/5er);
Pujols took him deep three times in that game...He made his major league debut in relief on 8/20/04 in game one of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium (2.0ip/1r).

The 24-year-old lefthander will be making his third start of the season tomorrow afternoon...He tossed 7.0 scoreless innings in his last start and left with a 2-0 lead, but received a no-decision in Pittsburgh’s 3-2, 12-inning loss to the Cardinals at PNC Park Tuesday night (4h/0bb/5so)...Was victorious in his first start; a 5-4 decision over Woody Williams in Houston on 4/4 (5.0ip/3r/2er)...Went 0-2 with a 7.96 ERA in seven Grapefruit League games (26.0ip/28h/26r/23er/15bb/23so)....Posted a 2-5 record and a 3.79 ERA in 11 starts with the Pirates last season after being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on 6/30...Was named the club’s Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year in 2006 after going 6-5 with a 2.35 ERA in 16 starts with Indy.

  • With 498 career victories, Jim Tracy is just two wins shy of 500 in his managergial career, He will become the 12th active manager with 500 career wins.
  • The entire Pirates team will wear uniform #42 during Major League Baseball's Jackie Robinson celebration on Sunday, April 15...Baseball's national celebration of the 60th anniversary of Robinson's major league debut will take place at Dodger Stadium on April 15 prior to the game between the Dodgers and Padres.
  • Prior to tonight's game, the Pirates announced that the club will retire the number 11 worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Paul Waner...Today marks the anniversary of Waner's big league debut with the Pirates in 1926...The team will hold a pregame ceremony on July 21 to officially add Waner's name to the list of retired numbers along the club level facade..The July 21 date marks the anniversary of Waner's induction into the Hall of Fame in 1952.
  • The Pirates won six of their seven games played against San Francisco last year, winning all three played at PNC Park while holding the Giants to just four runs.

ON THE D.L.:
Pitcher John Grabow (left elbow irritation - eligible on 4/7) is on the 15-day disabled list...He is currently with Triple-A Indianapolis on a rehab assignment and tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his first rehab appearance Saturday afternoon (0h/1bb/0so)...He is expected to pitch again tonight when Indianapolis visits Norfolk.

Matt Capps - Pitched 1.0 scoreless frame Wednesday vs. St. Louis...Singled off Todd Coffey for first major league hit in 8th inning Sunday at CIN.

Shawn Chacon - Pitched career-high 4.0 innings of relief Friday night vs. SF - only run allowed came on solo homer to Barry Bonds (5 K's).

Damaso Marte - Struck out four of the six batters he faced while tossing 2.0 perfect innings of relief against the Giants Friday night.

Juan Perez - Issued four walks while pitching a scoreless 9th inning Friday night...Shares team lead with six appearances.

Salomon Torres - Surrendered a pinch-hit home run in ninth inning to St. Louis' Chris Duncan on Wednesday and suffered first loss.
