Pre-Game Notes

TODAYS STARTER:
PAUL MAHOLM:
The 24-year-old lefthander is making his second start of the season this afternoon.

LAST START:

Maholm’s first start of the season was a 6-1 loss to Matt Belisle at Cincinnati last Friday...He surrendered a run in the 1st inning and a three-run homer to Jeff Conine with two outs in the 3rd...The Pirates, who scored a run in their first at bat, were held hitless after Jose Bautista led off the 2nd inning with a double.

IN THE SPRING:

Paul went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in four official starts during spring training...In addition, he made start in a minor league game against the Twins at Pirate City on 3/20 (5.0ip/3h/1r/1er/0bb/4so) and threw on the side twice after starting a “B” game against the Reds at Pirate City on 3/4 (3.0ip/3h/3r/3er/2bb/4so).

GETTING PAST THE FIRST:

Maholm was scored upon once in the 1st inning in his first start of 2007...He allowed a total of 29 first-inning runs in his 30 starts last season, including 17 in his last 13 starts...He posted an 8.40 ERA (30.0ip/28er) in the first inning last year and a 4.01 ERA (146.0ip/65er) after the opening frame.

PICKING ON THE OTHER GUYS:
Paul ranked second behind teammate Zach Duke (12) among National League pitchers with 11 caught stealings/pickoffs in 2006.

LIMITING THE LEFTIES:
Among the 23 home runs he has allowed in the major leagues, Maholm has surrendered just one to a left-handed batter...Minnesota’s Jason Kubel took him deep last year on 6/17...Overall he has held lefties to a .218 batting average (39-for-179).

MAHOLM vs. ST. LOUIS:
2006/CAREER:
1-1 with a 1.42 ERA (12.2ip/2er) in two starts...He lost a 2-1 decision to Jason Marquis at PNC Park on 4/17, surrendering both runs in the 1st inning (two-run homer by Albert Pujols)...His victory came after tossing 6.2 innings of a combined 7-0 shutout while beating Jason Marquis on 8/13 at PNC Park.

TOMORROW'S STARTER:
ZACH DUKE:
The 24-year-old lefthander will be making his third start of the season when he takes the mound against the Giants Friday night...His last start was a 6-3 win over Eric Milton in Cincinnati Sunday afternoon (6.0ip+/6h/3r/3er/0bb/5so)...Was the Opening Day starter and received a no-decision in Pittsburgh’s 4-2, 10-inning win over the Astros in Houston on 4/2 (7.0ip/2er)...Posted a 10-15 record and a 4.47 ERA in 34 starts with the Pirates last year, leading the staff in starts and innings pitched (215.1ip)...Went 9-4 with a 4.19 ERA in 17 starts at PNC Park in 2006.

vs. SAN FRANCISCO:
0-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two starts last year, receiving no-decisions at AT&T Park on 6/8 (6.0ip+/3er) and at PNC Park on 7/30 (6.1ip/0r).

TEAM NOTES:
With 498 career victories, Jim Tracy is just two wins shy of 500 in his managergial career, He will become the 12th active manager with 500 career wins.

42:
The entire Pirates team will wear uniform #42 during Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson celebration on Sunday, April 15...Baseball’s national celebration of the 60th anniversary of Robinson’s major league debut will take place at Dodger Stadium on April 15 prior to the game between the Dodgers and Padres.

ON THE D.L.:
Pitcher John Grabow (left elbow irritation - eligible on 4/7) is on the 15-day disabled list...He is scheduled to pitch two innings in an extended spring training game today.

Through The Dugout:
Jose Bautista - Has started each of the first eight games at third base...Hit first home run of the season Tuesday night.

Jason Bay - has hit 99 home runs in his career, 98 coming in a Pirates uniform. With his next homer, he will become just the sixth Canadian-born player with 100 or more home runs in the major Larry Walker (368), Matt Stairs (220), Jeff Heath (194), Corey Koskie (124) and George Selkirk (108).

Jose Castillo - Started each of the first four games at second base, Picked up lone hit Tuesday night in Houston.

Humberto Cota - Made first start/appearance behind the plate Saturday afternoon and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Chris Duffy - Had six game hitting streak end Tuesday...Has reached base safely in all seven of his games.

Brad Eldred - Went 0-for-2 off the bench Tuesday night...Made first appearance of season Sunday and went 2-4 with a HR.

Don Kelly - Popped out in pinch hit appearance Tuesday night vs. St. Louis.

Adam LaRoche - Has started each of the first eight games at first base...Has reached base safely in 5 of the last 7 games.

Nate McLouth - Had a pinch hit single Tuesday vs. St. Louis - has gone 3-for-4 with a home run as a pinch hitter in 2007.

Xavier Nady - Has made seven starts in right field and one in center field (4/8 in Cincinnti).

Ronny Paulino - Has started seven of the first eight games at catcher (sat out Saturday afternoon’s game in Cincinnati).

Freddy Sanchez - Went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored Tuesday night vs. St. Louis.

Jack Wilson - Went 2-for-5 with two RBI Sunday in Cincinnati - connected off Eric Milton for first homer of the season.

Through The Pen:
Jonah Bayless - Struck out two of the three batters he faced Monday...Has surrendered just one hit in his team-high five appearances (3.1ip).

Matt Capps - Pitched 1.0 scoreless frame Tuesday vs. St. Louis...Singled off Todd Coffey for first major league hit in 8th inning Sunday at CIN.

Shawn Chacon - Tossed 2.0 scoreless frames Tuesday night vs. St. Louis...Also worked 2.0 scoreless frames Saturday in Cincinnati.

Damaso Marte - Allowed his two inherited runners to score in 3-0 loss to St. Louis Monday afternoon (gave up two-run double to Preston Wilson).

Juan Perez - Faced one batter Sunday afternoon and surrendered RBI-double to Javier Valentin (inherited runner).

Salomon Torres - Suffered first blown save after allowing one run in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday night vs. St. Louis.

John Wasdin - Allowed one run in the 12th inning and suffered first loss Tuesday night vs. St. Louis.
