Pre-Game Notes

APRIL 10, 2007 AT PNC PARK --- GAME #8, HOME #2
LHP RANDY KEISLER (2007 debut) vs. LHP TOM GORZELANNY (1-0, 3.60 ERA)

The 24-year-old lefthander is making his second start of the season tonight...He led the Bucs with 26.0 innings pitched this spring.
Tom won a 5-4 decision over Woody Williams in Houston last Wednesday night...He surrendered a run in three of his five innings of work, but was the recipient of a four-run 5th inning which gave the Pirates a 5-3 lead...Salomon Torres gave up a solo homer to Craig Biggio with two outs in the 9th before earning the save.
Gorzelanny went 0-2 with a 7.96 ERA in seven Grapefruit League games (five starts)...He was scored upon in the 1st inning in all five of his starts.
In his last nine starts, dating back to July 23 of last season, Tom has been charged with 16 earned runs in 55.0 innings of work (2.62 ERA)...In that time, he has pitched at least 6.0 innings six times.
Gorzelanny picked up his first major league win in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 victory over the Giants at PNC Park on 7/29/06...He surrendered a two-out run in the 1st inning and another two-out run in the 5th before leaving after 7.0 innings of work with a 4-2 lead (SF scored once in the 9th off Mike Gonzalez, who registered his 18th save).
Tom went 6-5 with a 2.35 ERA in 16 Triple-A starts this year...He was Indy’s Opening Day starter and did not allow a run in his first two outings (9.0ip)...He surrendered three runs or less in 13 of his 16 outings and was named Pittsburgh’s Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year.

2007/CAREER: Has never faced the Cardinals.

The 24-year-old lefthander will be making his second start of the season tomorrow afternoon...His first start of the campaign was a 6-1 loss to Matt Belisle in Cincinnati Friday night (5.0ip/7h/4r/4er/2bb/2so)...Went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in four Grapefruit League starts this year (18.2ip/7er)...Spent first major league season with the Bucs last year and went 8-10 with a 4.76 ERA in 30 starts, ranking third among National League rookies in starts.
vs. ST. LOUIS:
1-1 with a 1.42 ERA (12.2ip/2er) in two career starts...He lost a 2-1 decision to Jason Marquis @PNC Park on 4/17/06, surrendering both runs in the 1st inning...He also tossed 6.2 innings of a combined 7-0 shutout while beating Jason Marquis on 8/13 at PNC Park.

This six-game, seven-day homestand continues tonight with the second of three games against the Cardinals...Following a day off Thursday, it concludes with a three-game series against San Francisco beginning Friday night - the only visit of the season by the Giants.
With 498 career victories, Jim Tracy is just two wins shy of 500 in his managergial career, He will become the 12th active manager with 500 career wins.
The Bucs posted a 43-38 record at PNC Park last year, winning their last two games and 10 of their final 15...They also went 12-13-1 in series, winning four of the last five and eight of the last 12.

The entire Pirates team will wear uniform #42 during Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson celebration on Sunday, April 15...Baseball’s national celebration of the 60th anniversary of Robinson’s major league debut will take place at Dodger Stadium on April 15 prior to the game between the Dodgers and Padres.

Pitcher John Grabow (left elbow irritation - eligible on 4/7) is on the 15-day disabled list.

Through The Dugout:
Jose Bautista - Has started each of the first seven games at third base...Leads club with four doubles.

Jason Bay - has hit 99 home runs in his career, 98 coming in a Pirates uniform. With his next homer, he will become just the sixth Canadian-born player with 100 or more home runs in the major Larry Walker (368), Matt Stairs (220), Jeff Heath (194), Corey Koskie (124) and George Selkirk (108).

Jose Castillo - Started each of the first four games at second base, Picked up lone hit Tuesday night in Houston.

Humberto Cota - Made first start/appearance behind the plate Saturday afternoon and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Chris Duffy - Has hit safely in all six of his games...Has led off and played center field in all of his games.

Brad Eldred - Made first appearance of the season as a starter in RF Sunday in Cincinnati and went 2-for-4 with a homer.

Don Kelly - Made first major league start Saturday at second base - went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Adam LaRoche - Has started each of the first seven games at first base...Has reached base safely in five of the last six games.

Nate McLouth - Played final four innings of Saturday’s game in right field.

Xavier Nady - Has reached base safely in six of the first seven games; has hit safely in five of the seven.

Ronny Paulino - Has hit safely in four of his last five games...Had an RBI in three straight games from 4/3-4/6.

Freddy Sanchez - Made first appearance of the season on Sunday - led off and went 2-for-4 while playing second base.

Jack Wilson - Has started first seven games at shortstop...Has hit safely in five of the seven games (four multi-hit games).

Through The Pen:
Jonah Bayless - Struck out two of the three batters he faced Monday...Has surrendered just one hit in his team-high five appearances (3.1ip).

Matt Capps - Pitched 1.1 scoreless frames in Cincinnati on Sunday - singled off Todd Coffey for first major league hit in 8th inning.

Shawn Chacon - Struck out four batters while tossing 2.0 innings (1 run) in Cincinnati Saturday afternoon.

Damaso Marte - Allowed his two inherited runners to score in 3-0 loss to St. Louis Monday afternoon (gave up two-run double to Preston Wilson).

Juan Perez - Faced one batter Sunday afternoon and surrendered RBI-double to Javier Valentin (inherited runner).

Salomon Torres - Pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati to earn fourth save.

John Wasdin - Was charged with two earned runs in 3-0 Bucco loss to the Cardinals Monday afternoon.
