Post-Game Notes

6 Down, 75 to Respectability

Overall a much better win than yesterday, sound fundamentals and good defense. The Pirates recorded a 6-1 victory over the Defending World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals as Tom Gorzelanny went 8 1/3 strong innings. He allowed four hits and one earned run in the outing.

Matt Capps came is and silenced the Cards recording strikeouts on both batters he faced, Rolen and Wilson.

The offense once again started hot scoring two in the first. Jack Wilson plated Chris Duffy on an error by Preston Wilson. Xavier Nady singled in Wilson moments later.

Although Gorzelann didn't need any additional runs, the Pirates offense continued to shine in the 3rd inning as Adam LaRoche hooked a homer inside the foul pole, for his second home run of the season, which drove in Jack Wilson and Jason Bay giving the Pirates a 5-0 lead.

St. Louis scored one off Gorzelanny in the 5th on a sac fly by Bennett to make the score Pirates 5 Cardinals 1.

Ronny Paulino doubled in Xavier Nady in the 7th to restore the 5 run cushion and give the Pirates a 6-1 lead.

Radio Edit:
I absolutely hate listening to the Cardinals announcers. Yesterday they asked how Cedar Rapids, Iowa was about six times. I live in Iowa about 10 minutes from Cedar Rapids and I don't talk about the town that much. They talked more about foul balls and souvenirs than the Pirates kicking Cardinal butt.
