Pre-Game Notes

The Pirates play the Yankees at 1:05. Shawn Chacon and New York’s Darrell Rasner (RH) are scheduled to start. Shane Youman and Josh Sharpless should also see some time. Zach Duke is expected to start in a minor league game at Pirate City.

The Pirates lost 5-3 to the Blue Jays. Tony Armas surrendered 2 runs in 5 innings. Masumi Kuwata and John Wasdin each worked a scoreless inning. Brad Eldred hit a three-run homer in the 4th inning, his fifth of the spring. Jack Wilson had 2 hits.

Chacon is making his fourth start of the spring today. He has a 3.12 ERA in his first three outings. In his last appearance he threw 36 pitches in 2 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs against Twins minor leaguers at Pirate City on March 20th.

The Pirates play the Twins in a 1:05 game. Ian Snell is is scheduled against Minnesota’s Carlos Silva (RHP).

  • Jose Castillo has started eight games at third base and four at second base.
  • Castillo has a seven-game hitting streak.
  • Einar Diaz has three hits in his last six at bats and has gone 7-for-15 this spring.
  • Ryan Doumit has reached base safely nine times in his last 20 plate appearances.
  • Adam LaRoche hit his first home run of the spring on Tuesday and has nine hits in his last 26 at bats.
  • Ronny Paulino has collected 17 hits in his last 26 at bats (.654) and is hitting .500 (17 for 34) with a team leading 10 RBI this spring.
  • Michael Ryan has played in a team-high tying 18 games and is hitting .400 with a team-leading 14 runs and six doubles.
  • Freddy Sanchez, who has not played in a Grapefruit League game since suffering a sprained right knee while turning a doubleplay on March 6th, may return today.
  • Jack Wilson has eight hits in his last 12 at bats and has reached base safely seven times in his last 10 plate appearances.
  • Josh Sharpless leads the team with two saves and has been scored upon just once in his seven outings.
  • Shane Youman has not allowed a run in his first four appearances covering 7 1/3 innings.
  • The Pirates have not committed an error in their last four games and have now gone 41 innings since their last.
