Pre-Game Notes

The circus comes to town! The Pirates hook up with the Red Sox at 1:05. The game is being televised nationally by ESPN. Tom Gorzelanny and Daisuke Matsuzaka (RH) are scheduled to start. Jim Brower, Marty McLeary, Dan Kolb and Damaso Marte are also expected to pitch.

The Pirates beat the Tigers 3-1 behind Sean Burnett pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Josh Sharpless went 1 2/3 scoreless. Chris Duffy tripled and scored a run. Jack Wilson had an RBI-double. Adam LaRoche hit his first home run of the spring.

Gorzelanny is making his third start and fifth appearance of the spring. Has has a 10.45 ERA in his first four outings. Last outing he allowed two runs in 4 innings.

The Pirates visit the Blue Jays for a 1:05 game against. Tony Armas Jr. is scheduled against Roy Halladay (RHP). Masumi Kuwata, John Wasdin, Salomon Torres, Matt Capps and Jonah Bayliss are also scheduled.

Yesterday’s crowd of 6,102 was the second-largest in the history of McKechnie Field (6,221 on 3/31/94 is the all-time high). Both marks are expected to fall with the arrival of Dice K.

  • Jose Castillo has started eight games at third base and three at second base and has a six-game hitting streak.
  • Einar Diaz has three hits in his last five at bats and has gone 7 for 14 this spring.
  • Ryan Doumit has reached base safely nine times in his last 16 plate appearances.
  • Adam LaRoche has eight hits in his last 24 at bats.
  • Ronny Paulino has collected 16 hits in his last 23 at bats (.696) and is hitting .516 (16 for 31) this spring.
  • Michael Ryan has played in a team-high tying 16 games and is hitting .425 with a team-leading six doubles.
  • Freddy Sanchez has not played in a game since suffering a sprained right knee while turning a doubleplay on March 6th.
  • Jack Wilson has six hits in his last nine at bats and has reached base safely seven times in his last 10 plate appearances.
  • Jim Brower has made four scoreless appearances over 4 1/3 innings.
  • Dan Kolb has been scored upon just once in his first six outings.
